About Us - Morton Michel
Morton Michel is the UK’s market leader in childcare insurance. We expertly insure 23,000 childminders and nannies, 9,000 nurseries and playgroups, and 5,000 out of school clubs and holiday play schemes, as well as numerous other social and voluntary groups connected with childcare. We also have a busy motor, general and commercial department.
The Morton Michel Story
It was 1964, and the times were changing. There was lots of energy and excitement, which encouraged everyone to be enterprising. Kathy and David Beere had met when they both worked for a large insurance Company and were busy bringing up their young family. By 1964 David, a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, was fast progressing up the insurance business ladder. Kathy, on the other hand, had left the insurance company to take care of her children.
Until that time there had been very little provision for children under five, but playgroups for preschool children were just starting to be formed, and Kathy took her eldest son to the afternoon session. Soon, Kathy’s involvement with her local group grew, and she began working part-time as a playleader. The playgroup organizer was finding it virtually impossible to obtain insurance because the mixture of toddlers, water, paint and church halls sent shudders down the spines of most insurers! As Kathy’s husband worked in insurance, the owner of the playgroup approached her for advice. Kathy took the query to David, who set up a specialised insurance scheme that was tailored to the needs of playgroups.
Morton Michel enjoyed steady growth over the years, and as new childcare ventures began, David and Kathy expanded their business to provide cover for them, too. Morton Michel was the first company to offer insurance for registered childminders, nannies and many more, and as a result, David and Kathy began to employ staff to help them with the workload.
Their children, Nick, Jerry and Samantha, were growing up, and they went into the office with their parents on Saturdays and during the school holidays to help out with such tasks as filing, sending out renewal invitations, and opening the post. One by one, all three children eventually joined the family firm, each bringing new ideas and contributing to its success in their own ways.
Kathy retired from the firm on her 70th birthday in 2004, and David retired in May 2005, while Samantha, Jerry and Nick remain directors of the firm, dedicated to continuing the business with the same ethos of hard work and good customer service established by their parents.

In 2014, we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary. We have seen many changes since 1964, but some things never change - such as Morton Michel’s integrity and reliability.
