September 2009 - Sarah steels herself for charity walk of Great Wall

An award-winning nursery businesswoman is to walk the Great Wall of China to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support next month.

Sarah Steel, Managing Director of The Old Station Nursery Group, and nine other volunteers each need to raise at least £2,850 for their chosen charities before they embark on the 11-day trip on 15 October. Their 80 km trek will cover old sections of the Great Wall as well as restored sections with smooth flagstones and lots of steep steps.

Mrs Steel said, ““A friend and colleague came up with the idea of getting a group of business people together to do something worthwhile for charity and asked me if I wanted to take part.

“The Old Station Nursery employs over 250 women, very few of whom have not been affected by cancer within our circle of family and friends. I want to use this trek to raise funds for a great cause and to highlight the fantastic work carried out by Macmillan Cancer Support.

“We want to raise as much money as possible.”

The Old Schoolhouse Nursery Group was founded in 2002 and has nurseries and out-of-school Clubs in Oxfordshire, Rutland, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. Last year the company won a business growth award from Nursery World magazine. The company also won the Nursery Management Today Business Development Award in 2007, while in the same year Sarah won the Inspirational Business Mum of the Year.

Donations can be made directly to Macmillan Cancer Support via the JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/oldstationnursery.
