Child abuse investigation into Wiltshire nursery is dropped

Police have dropped a five month investigation into child sex abuse at a nursery in Wiltshire.

Little Angels Nursery in Calne had its registration cancelled by Ofsted in August, after a 37-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man were arrested and bailed by police. The pair have now been released without charge, according to Wiltshire Police.

The owner, Rachel Cartmell, who was not arrested, was forced to liquidate the company that ran the nursery as she could not afford to carry on paying staff and bills while the nursery was closed. The nursery closed permanently in September.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: 'We can confirm that after completing a rigorous and complex investigation into alleged sexual abuse against children, the bail of a 37 year-old woman and 48 year-old man who were previously arrested has been cancelled. No further police action is being taken against any party regarding this case and our investigation has now concluded.

'Whilst we appreciate this has caused a considerable amount of concern in the local community, due to the nature and scope of the investigation, it was imperative given the information passed to us that our enquiries were comprehensive and thorough.'

The spokesperson added: 'We have worked closely throughout this investigation with a number of appropriate partner agencies and continue to do so in supporting all parties involved. We would like to thank the public for their understanding and co-operation with this investigation.'

Little Angels Nursery opened in 2009 and had previously been rated by Ofsted as Good.
