Inclusivity and the role of male staff in early years
Inclusivity and the role of male staff in early years
One of the clearest messages from the Big Day Out was that a genuinely inclusive early years workforce must include more men, and that current assumptions are holding the sector back.
Despite 9 in 10 parents wanting more balanced gender representation, men still face significant barriers in practice. Male educators described persistent suspicion around tasks such as nappy changing, with some parents actively requesting female staff even where policies and ratios make this difficult. Media focus on rare but extreme safeguarding cases compounds the problem, creating a distorted picture of risk and leaving many men worried about false accusations.
Speakers argued that this is not only unfair on staff but a missed opportunity for children. Mixed gender teams provide richer positive role models, help challenge narrow ideas about who does care work, and can play a part in preventing misogynistic attitudes forming later in life. The sector needs to be explicit about this, from recruitment campaigns and job descriptions through to website content and nursery mission statements.
Practical steps include promoting early years as a credible career option for boys and young men in schools and colleges, hosting events such as Father’s Day activities, workshops on early parenthood and opening up honest conversations with parents about their concerns. The message from the day was clear: men in early years do not represent all men, but their presence matters - for children’s experiences, for workforce resilience and for the kind of society nurseries are helping to build.
