Looking ahead: what's next in 2026?
The key themes of the new Ofsted report cards, cyber safeguarding and increasing professionalism, that we observed throughout Q1 can be used to predict what the topics of future conversations might be. We might expect Nursery leaders to focus on:
• Extra scrutiny of inspection outcomes- Ofsted will be publishing more data under the new framework so we expect the comparisons between PVI and school based settings will intensify. Organisations will push for evidence on fairness and consistency.
• Acceleration of consolidation and franchising- Stable demand, combined with increased cost pressures, will continue to drive mergers, acquisitions and franchise models, particularly in areas with strong local reputations.
• Professionalisation of roles and culture- The shift in language towards “educators”, the focus on psychological safety and the desire for structured personal development suggest a continued move to frame early years as a skilled, long term career path.
• Advancements in digital safeguarding and cyber resilience- Pressure will grow for nurseries to demonstrate robust cyber security as part of overall safeguarding. Groups are likely to revisit their cyber policies as part of a broader resilience strategy that includes training, processes, insurance and technology.
As a specialist partner to the childcare sector, Morton Michel’s focus is on helping Nurseries navigate these changes. Understanding where risk is genuinely shifting, where narratives may be ahead of reality, and where practical tools can make a tangible difference.
If Q1 2026 has shown anything, it is that early years is both under pressure and on the cusp of significant change. The challenge for the rest of the year will be to convert the current spotlight into sustainable, well supported practice that protects children, supports staff and keeps businesses resilient in a more demanding environment.
